Union County Release Records
A Union County Jail exit can mean freedom from confinement, but it can also mean that another agency took custody. Bond, a court order, time served, dismissal, probation, or completion of a county sentence may return someone to the community. A transfer to the Florida Department of Corrections, another jail, the U.S. Marshals Service, or ICE does not. The release reason and destination matter as much as the date.
The Union County Sheriff's Office keeps the county booking and release record. Florida Department of Corrections records cover state prisoners and state supervision, not county-jail-only cases. Court files explain the legal order behind a release. VINE can provide a prompt event notice, while the source agency record gives lasting proof. A released person usually drops from a custody roster because the roster answers who is held now, not who left in the past.
- Discharge
- The formal end of a custody term or a supervision term.
- Time served
- A sentence or order credits enough time already spent in custody.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take or keep custody.
- Parole
- A limited form of supervised prison release for a legally eligible sentence.
Union County Inmate Release Types
Read the recorded event rather than treating every exit as the same result. Bond ends the jail stay while the criminal case may continue. A dismissal or acquittal is a court outcome and may not be the jail's own release code. Probation and community control place a person in the community under rules. Parole and conditional release apply to narrower state-prison groups. Hospital movement, escape, and death are not community releases.
| Recorded event | What it means | Next official source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court order | County jail custody ends, often while the case remains open | UCSO release record and Union County court file |
| Time served or sentence complete | The ordered custodial term is credited or finished | Release entry plus judgment and sentence |
| Probation or community control | Community supervision follows confinement or a court sentence | FDC supervision search and court order |
| FDC release or discharge | State prison custody ends | FDC inmate-release and supervision databases |
| Transfer or detainer | One facility releases the person to another custodian | Receiving agency locator and transfer record |
A release date alone cannot distinguish these events. Ask for the release type or authority and the receiving agency or destination when that field is maintained.
Note: A county jail exit code should be read with the court order and destination before it is described as release to the community.
Fields in Union County Releases
A focused record request identifies the person and the custody episode. Use a full name, date of birth when needed, booking or case number, and an approximate booking date. This helps UCSO separate similar names and find the matching jail-management entry. Some fields may be redacted under Florida law, but the nonexempt remainder can still answer the core release questions.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Booking or DC number | Connects the record to the correct jail or state-prison episode |
| Admission date and time | Marks when the documented custody period began |
| Release date and time | Records when that agency processed the exit |
| Release type or authority | Shows bond, order, time served, discharge, or another basis |
| Destination or receiving agency | Distinguishes community release from continued custody elsewhere |
| Charges, bond, and sentence | Links the jail event to the case and court terms |
| Booking photograph | Depicts the intake if maintained, public, and nonexempt |
The jail release record proves physical processing by UCSO. The clerk's judgment, bond order, dismissal, probation order, or termination entry explains the legal cause. Match the case and dates before relying on either record.
Request Union County Release Records
The UCSO Records Unit accepts telephone, in-person, and mailed inquiries under Florida's public-record law. It is at 55 West Main Street, Room 102, Lake Butler, Florida 32054, and operates weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays. The records and jail line is 386-496-2501. Mailed requests should include a self-addressed stamped envelope, enough postage, and a check for copy charges.
- Identify the person and custody episode with the best known name, date, booking number, case number, location, or involved deputy.
- Ask for existing booking and release records, including the release date and time, authority or type, and receiving agency if transferred.
- Request electronic copies when practical. Ask for a cost estimate before staff incur a special service charge.
- If part is withheld, ask for the nonexempt portion and the statute supporting each redaction.
- Use the Union County court file to obtain the order or disposition behind the jail event.

UCSO links a fee schedule, but the exact local schedule should be checked when the request is made. Under section 119.07, standard copies may carry statutory charges and extensive work may carry a reasonable service charge based on actual resource use. Florida sets no single response deadline for every request. The custodian must respond promptly and in good faith.
Note: Ask for an estimate before special-service work begins, since the size and redaction needs of each release request can change the cost.
Union County Release Record Retention
Online visibility is not the same as record retention. Florida's GS2 criminal-justice schedule assigns booking records and commitment-and-release lists a minimum retention of one anniversary year after release. A commitment and release list may cover a 24-hour period and may include identity, booking number, charges, bond, release method, and return date. The schedule does not prove that UCSO creates each listed format or publishes it online.
Court records can last much longer. Florida court retention rules preserve many criminal files for years, and final judgments or progress dockets receive long-term treatment. Sealed or expunged records are different. The FDLE process normally starts with a Certificate of Eligibility, then a petition and court order. The certificate alone neither changes the record nor guarantees relief. FDC says sealed and expunged material is removed from its public OBIS files. A missing search result therefore does not prove that no custody event occurred.
Florida Chapter 119 supports access to nonexempt records, but juvenile, victim, medical, security, sealed, expunged, and other protected material may be withheld or redacted.
Union County Bond Release Notice
Union County's victim-rights brochure warns that a defendant may post bond immediately after arrest and leave custody. It also says bond-release notice is not generally supplied outside specified serious or protected categories. That local limit makes direct confirmation vital. A court order authorizes release, but UCSO confirms whether the physical jail process occurred.
V.I.N.E.S. can send a status event because the sheriff says the Union County Jail participates in the system. Still, alert coverage and timing should not be assumed for every case. Call the jail when timing matters and obtain the release record afterward. Bond release means the jail stay ended. It does not mean charges were dismissed, the person was acquitted, or all case duties ended.
Note: Immediate bond release can occur before a general notice arrives, so direct UCSO confirmation remains the strongest same-day county check.
Union County Jail Release Scale
Union County operates a small local jail within a county that also contains several major state-corrections facilities. The sheriff documents 36 beds. FDC's February 2025 county-detention snapshot reported an average daily population of 25 and a 64 percent pretrial share. These are point-in-time population measures, not annual release totals, booking counts, turnover rates, or typical lengths of stay.
The pretrial share helps explain why bond and first-appearance events matter in Union County release research. It cannot be used to estimate how many people leave on a given day.
Find Union County Released Inmates
Start with the last known custodian. The county jail, a Florida prison, a federal institution, and ICE maintain separate systems. A person absent from one system may have entered another. No current-custody list should be treated as a historical release search.
- For the Union County Jail, check VINE and call UCSO. Then request the booking and release entry for durable proof.
- For RMC, RMC West, RMC Work Camp, Union Correctional Institution, or another Florida prison, search FDC by DC number or name.
- Search FDC community supervision after a state release. An active record can confirm community supervision, though not the exact jail door-out time.
- Use the Union County court search for the bond, sentence, dismissal, probation, or other legal disposition.
- Use BOP for federal custody and ICE ODLS for immigration custody. Each proves only the status of its own system.
A person who vanishes from a facility list may have been transferred. Confirm the event name, destination, and receiving agency before calling it a community release.
For a defined same-day interval, the Released Last 24 Hours route explains how to request an existing UCSO report. A named-person inquiry belongs in the custody-specific chain above.
FDC Union County Release Search
The FDC Offender Information Search separates current inmates, released inmates, community supervision, escapes, and wanted records. Use the DC number when known. With a name search, compare middle name, date of birth, descriptors, aliases, offenses, and case facts before choosing a result.
| FDC route | Useful fields | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| All databases | Name or DC number across correctional groups | Best when the current cohort is unclear |
| Inmate Release search | Last name, first name, DC number, demographic narrowing | State-prison release cohort since October 1, 1997 |
| Current inmate detail | Photo, facility, offenses, sentence, Current Release Date | Planning data while still in state custody |
| Community supervision | Identity, status, type, office and case details where shown | State supervision, not every county probation case |
The official OBIS data description explains the separate active, released, and supervised populations and expressly excludes county jail and county probation records. That boundary is crucial in Union County.
The official FDC search menu makes those separate search choices visible:
A state-prison release should move into FDC's release history, while a county-jail-only release can be absent from FDC without error.
Note: FDC monthly data files are useful for history, but a live person check should also use the current official offender search.
Union County Release Court Records
Union County's court path divides by case type. Circuit Court handles felony criminal cases. County Court handles misdemeanors and incarcerable criminal traffic. Searching the right division can reveal the disposition, judgment and sentence, jail-credit language, bond order, probation order, or termination entry that remains after a jail roster changes.
Begin with the anonymous Union County court search or the clerk's court services. Match the arrest date, charge, case number, and person. The court file explains legal authority, not the exact time UCSO finished release processing. Contact the clerk at 386-496-3711 when the needed criminal docket or certified document is not available through the public interface.
Union County Release Status Channels
VINELink can check a specific contributed record and register notifications. Union County Jail expressly participates in V.I.N.E.S., while FDC operates state-corrections notification. Read the event name because release, transfer, escape, death, and out-to-court are different. A VINE notice is prompt corroboration, not the same as a certified release record.
Federal custody uses the BOP Inmate Locator. A result marked “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” means BOP custody ended, but another authority or federal supervision may remain. ICE uses ODLS, searched with a nine-digit A-number and country of birth or an exact name route. ICE says qualifying recent releases may remain visible for a limited period, subject to exceptions and lag. A Union County Jail exit to ICE is a transfer.
The official BOP locator shows the fields and custody-status wording used for a federal result:
No federal prison or ICE detention center was identified inside Union County. These remain follow-on channels when another authority accepted custody.
Note: A federal locator result addresses only that federal custodian and cannot establish the earlier Union County Jail release type.
Identification After Union County Release
Union County has limited FLHSMV driver-license service in Room 108 of the courthouse complex that also houses sheriff and clerk functions. The official Union County location page is a practical starting point for identification service after release, subject to current document and eligibility rules.
Record corrections follow the creating agency. UCSO Records handles a local jail record. FDC Central Records handles a state-prison record. The clerk controls court filings. An identification office cannot rewrite a release record, and a corrections office cannot correct a clerk docket. Keeping the booking number, DC number, case number, and release paperwork makes the right request easier to route.
Travel After Union County Release
Union County's Transportation Disadvantaged program is coordinated through Suwannee River Economic Council. The official procurement material describes service for qualifying ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher riders on weekdays during stated service hours, excluding holidays. Eligibility and advance reservation rules apply.
Nothing in that source describes an on-demand jail gate shuttle. A pickup plan should therefore be made with the actual release time, rider eligibility, reservation process, and service schedule confirmed in advance. Same-day jail processing can change, and a court's expected release does not prove that the person has cleared every hold. UCSO remains the source for physical release timing.
Note: Transportation eligibility and reservations should be confirmed before release because the documented county program is not an immediate jail pickup service.
Union County Release Lookup Choices
The operator and custody layer determine where to search. Union County is unusual because its small county jail sits near a large concentration of state reception, medical, work-camp, and prison functions. Facility names must stay attached to every status claim.
| Situation | Best source | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Still held by UCSO | UCSO direct inquiry and VINE | Current county custody or a contributed event |
| Released from Union County Jail | UCSO booking/release record | County exit time, type, and destination where maintained |
| Moved from an RMC unit | FDC current location and incarceration history | Transfer within FDC versus state discharge |
| Released from Florida prison | FDC inmate-release and supervision searches | State out-custody history and later supervision |
| Federal or immigration status | BOP or ICE locator | Status within that federal system only |
Union County Release Facilities
Union County Jail is the local sheriff-operated jail. Its release record distinguishes return to the community from a transfer. Reception and Medical Center is an FDC reception and medical complex. Its Main, West, and Work Camp movements must be checked in statewide FDC records because a move within the complex or to another institution is not a discharge.
- Union County Jail: county bond, court, time-served, sentence, and transfer exits.
- Reception and Medical Center: statewide reception, classification, and medical custody.
- Reception and Medical Center West Unit: medical, transit, reception, and permanent populations.
- Reception and Medical Center Work Camp: FDC custody, including outside work and reentry programming.
- Union Correctional Institution: state prison releases and transfers verified through FDC.
RMC movement is especially easy to misread. A person leaving West Unit may be going to permanent placement, and community-custody status at the Work Camp still means FDC custody. Union Correctional Institution is also distinct from Union County Jail and from Florida State Prison across the county line.
Note: Always match the operator, facility name, booking or DC number, and destination before treating a Union County custody change as release.
